As much as Id like to believe that every optometrist runs to his or her mailbox, intent on immediately reading this magazine from cover to cover, I realize thats not exactly the case. Rather, I often hear that Review is great vacation reading. Personally, I dont know what Id think of the guy on the beach towel next to me if he were reading Vanquish the Virus, but I guess I should count my blessings. Even if you dont read Review immediately, its good to know that you take your time and read it thoroughly.

To celebrate the onset of your summer reading frenzy, we print an ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) report every year in the May issue of Review. In it, we include cutting-edge research on cataract and refractive surgery, cornea, retina and glaucoma. In other words, its the sneak preview for anything you might miss later in the year, when those beautiful leaves begin to fall and the summer sun is a distant memory.

Its easy to dismiss new research and claim that it doesnt affect you or help you in your day-to-day life and work. But one thing I love about optometry is that its a very forward-looking profession. Research does, indeed, dictate how you practice day-to-day. While much of the world kicks back and falls into autopilot at this time of year, optometry becomes increasingly engrossed in the futureyet always keeps an eye on whats most important: enjoying life, cherishing family and looking out for the health and well-being of others.

Optometrists truly seem to have found the perfect balance. Our staff tried to emulate that in this issue of Review. Besides the forward-looking research and monthly continuing education, youll find articles that embrace the most important part of the future: children. Besides the special series, Pediatric Practice, youll find information on how a major amblyopia study will change your treatment decisions. Also, dont miss the special report, How to Care for the Pregnant Patient.

We think youll enjoy all the summer reading weve packed into this months issue. And, I hope to see many of you in June, as Review celebrates the beginning of summer with the annual ForeSight East meeting. This year, the meeting is in Bermuda! Yes, I know: Life is tough. In between snorkeling trips with your kids and romantic dinners with your significant others, youll be hard at work, reading Review, contemplating how new research can change the lives of patients and family and, of course, warming your toes in the pink Bermuda sand.
