Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) spurs retinal angiogenesis in proliferative diabetic retinopathy, but its not the only factor. Researchers at Kyoto University in Japan have identified erythropoietin, which acts independently of VEGF, as a potent ischemia-induced angiogenic factor. However, the researchers havent confirmed erythropoietins role in ocular angiogenesis.
