Many in optometry are big supporters of rebound tonometry, as its effortlessness, quick IOP measurement and lack of required anesthesia or air puffs can provide a more productive experience for doctor and patient alike. Though such devices are usually offered as portable or handheld options, a new rebound tonometry option can be mounted on a slit lamp like a typical Goldmann applanation tonometry setup. iCare has introduced a new alternative that helps integrate that approach to the standard slit lamp exam, the company says in a press release.
Its new tonometer, the iCare ST500, combines the company’s rebound tonometry approach with a design that can be incorporated back into the exam chair. It contains an 8mm focus rod mounting hole that is compatible with most slit lamps. This configuration can allow for easy patient positioning, while its display can assist in alignment and acquisition. Its fast and repeatable measurement could be operated with an optional handheld remote control, the release explains.
A “Quick Measure” mode available on the iCare ST500 requires two or three rapid measurements instead of the usual six, which the company says can capture repeatable and accurate operator-independent IOP measurements easily.
Because the slit lamp–mounted design minimizes the need for repositioning, the device is said to offer a better patient experience and improved clinical workflow.
