The scleral lens renaissance has brought this tried-and-true lens into many doctors’ offices for the first time. But some may find the design concepts to be a challenge, especially newcomers. A new software tool from EyePrint Prosthetics called ScanFitPro seeks to improve accuracy and confidence in the results.

The algorithm uses the Pentacam’s Corneal Scleral Profile (CSP) report, generated by 250 Scheimpflug images covering a diameter of up to 17mm. All images are taken in a straight-on gaze without need for secondary gazes, preventing off-axis elevation disparities, the company says. ScanFitPro then automatically designs a lens in three-dimensional space and gives the user the ability to customize from there. The topographical data received from the CSP report is combined with an overlaid iris image to allow the physician to visualize the device on the patient’s eye. 

The software aligns the lens optics directly with the line of sight, “eliminating the need for guessing and multiple trial lens fittings,” a company press release explains. Each lens is also designed to match the patient’s own scleral profile, according to EyePrint Prosthetics.
